Most visitors reach Hiroshima, spend a morning at the Peace Park, an afternoon on Miyajima, and leave. Kure is forty minutes down the coast and it is where the other half of the story sits.
This was the largest naval arsenal in Asia. The battleship Yamato was built here. The Maritime Self-Defense Force still keeps its fleet in the same harbour, and this small boat runs a loop through it — past destroyers, supply ships, and the submarine pier, close enough that you are looking at hulls rather than silhouettes.
It costs less than a coffee and a sandwich, and it runs year round. If you do one thing in Kure, do this one first — the museums across the road make far more sense afterwards.
