Inside a submarine that was still at sea in this century

The Akishio was lifted out of the water and set down beside the road. You walk through the control room and put your eye to the periscope.

You see it before you work out what you are looking at: a full-size submarine, out of the water, sitting next to a street.

Inside, the corridors are the width of your shoulders. The bunks are stacked three high against the hull. Standing in the control room is the part that stays with people — not because it is dramatic, but because it is so much smaller than anyone imagines.

It sits directly across from the Yamato Museum, so the two are naturally done together. Give the pair of them half a day.
