The Yamato was the largest battleship ever built, and it was built here. The museum's centrepiece is a scale model long enough that you walk its length to see it.
What makes the place worth an hour and a half is not the model, though. It is the account of what a shipbuilding town becomes in wartime, and what happened to it afterwards. Kure and Hiroshima are twenty-five kilometres apart, and the two stories are the same story.
Go here after the harbour cruise, not before. Seeing the modern fleet first gives the history somewhere to land.
