Kure Day Trip from Hiroshima: The 2026 Guide (Yamato Museum Has Reopened)

Most English guides to Kure still tell you the Yamato Museum is closed for renovation, and that you will have to make do with a one-room substitute exhibition. That was true for fourteen months. It stopped being true on 23 April 2026.

The main building is open again, the tenth-scale battleship is back on the floor, and Kure has quietly become the best half-day trip you can take out of Hiroshima — better, for most people, than a second day in the city centre. Here is what actually changed, what it costs now, and how to fit it around a Peace Park morning.

What changed in April 2026

The Yamato Museum closed in February 2025 for its first full renovation since opening in 2005. It reopened exactly twenty-one years to the day after its original opening, and the changes are more than cosmetic.

The collection grew by roughly 300 pieces, to around 2,100 items on display. A new science-and-technology gallery covers shipbuilding and aviation engineering with hands-on exhibits rather than glass cases.

The tenth-scale Yamato was corrected in about nineteen places. This is the detail nobody outside Japan has written about, and it is the most interesting thing in the building. Underwater surveys of the wreck produced new evidence, and the model was rebuilt to match it: the chrysanthemum crest on the bow was reduced from 15cm to 10cm in diameter, the draft markings at bow and stern were removed because they were never there, and the deck planking now runs all the way to the edge — the survey showed the ship had no deck drainage channels. You are looking at a model that is more accurate than the one visitors saw for two decades.

Audio guides now run in 24 languages. English support used to be thin. This alone changes whether the museum is worth ¥1,000 to a non-Japanese speaker.

Admission doubled. It is now ¥1,000 for adults, ¥300 for high school students, ¥200 for elementary and junior high, free for preschoolers. It was ¥500 before the closure, so older guides will quote you the wrong number.

It stays open every day from 29 April to 5 May, 21 July to 31 August, and 29 December to 3 January. Free volunteer-led tours run at 10:00 and 14:00 with no reservation needed — worth timing your arrival around if you want the history rather than just the hardware.

One thing the ticket desk will not necessarily tell you: your same-day Yamato Museum ticket gets you into the Yamato Museum Satellite for free. The Satellite was the temporary exhibition space used during the closure, and rather than shutting it down, the city extended it through 31 March 2027. Show your ticket at the door. It is a five-minute walk, near Kure Station.

JMSDF Kure Museum — the “Iron Whale”

Directly across from the Yamato Museum, and free. You cannot miss it: there is a decommissioned submarine sitting on land beside the building, and you can walk through the inside of it. The Akishio served in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force until 2004 and is the only submarine in Japan you can board.

If you only have time for one building, and you have any interest in how people live inside a steel tube for months, choose this one over the Yamato Museum.

Alley Karasukojima

A twenty-minute walk or short bus ride from the museums, and the reason to stay a little longer. It is the only park in Japan where you can stand this close to active submarines. They tie up at the pier directly in front of you. No admission, no ticket, no barrier beyond the fence — just working destroyers and submarines, close enough to read the hull numbers.

Go in the late afternoon. The light is better and the crowds have gone back to Hiroshima.

Getting there

JR Kure Line from Hiroshima Station. The rapid service (Aki-ji Liner) takes roughly 35 minutes; local trains take closer to 50. It is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and by the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, so for most visitors the ride is effectively free.

From Kure Station the museums are a five to eight minute walk, and the route runs mostly under cover through a shopping complex — a genuinely useful detail in a region that gets serious rain in June and July. Buses also run frequently from central Hiroshima if you are not near the JR line.

Eat this

Kure JMSDF curry. Every ship in the Kure fleet has its own curry recipe, and a rotating group of restaurants in town are licensed to serve the exact recipe of a specific vessel, certified by that ship’s crew. You are eating a submarine’s house curry. Ask at the tourist information desk in Kure Station for the current list, since it rotates.

Kure reimen. Cold noodles, but not the Korean-influenced version you will find elsewhere. Flat noodles, a sweet-sour soy and sesame broth, chashu, boiled egg, and as much chilli as you ask for. A Kure invention, and genuinely local.

Two ways to do it

Half day, self-guided

About ¥1,000 plus transport. Leave Hiroshima at 9:00. Iron Whale first, since it is free and opens at 10:00. Yamato Museum from 11:00, catching the 14:00 guided tour depending on your pace. Curry for lunch. Back in Hiroshima by 16:00 with the evening free.

Full day, guided

If you would rather not navigate Japanese-only signage at the smaller sites, there is a nine-hour guided tour from Hiroshima covering the Yamato Museum, the JMSDF Museum, the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum, and a boat cruise around Kure harbour to see the active fleet from the water. The harbour cruise is the part you cannot easily replicate alone. It runs about 35 minutes from the Kure Central Pier for around ¥1,500 if you would rather book it separately on the day.

Should you go?

Yes, if You have three or more days in Hiroshima, or any interest in ships, engineering, or the machinery of twentieth-century history. The reopened museum is a legitimately world-class collection and nowhere near as crowded as anything in Kyoto.
No, if You have two days and have not seen Miyajima yet. Miyajima wins. Come back for Kure.

A note on timing for 2026. Hiroshima Castle’s keep closed to the public on 22 March 2026 for structural reasons, with a wooden reconstruction that will not finish for decades. The exterior is still viewable, but the interior exhibition is gone. If you had the castle penciled in as your second-day activity, Kure is the strongest replacement — and unlike the castle, it just got better rather than closing.
